We are delighted to report that planning for our 2009 programs for women elected officials is well underway! The four upcoming programs promote women's global -- and local -- leadership for women's human rights through enlightened public policy on such issues as: international trafficking of women and girls, reproductive rights and justice, HIV/AIDS, and the role of US foreign policy in ensuring women's human rights.

This issue of E-NEWS from the Center features two of these four signature programs: our third GlobalPOWER® program and our ninth annual Foreign Policy Institute for State Legislators.

  • GlobalPOWER® (Partnership Of Women Elected/Appointed Representatives) is a revolutionary new model of women's global policy leadership that creates sustainable long term partnerships - across borders and over time - among women Members of Parliament worldwide, to confront violations of women's human rights. The 2009 GlobalPOWER® participants will meet in Washington, DC from May 31-June 5, 2009 to share their expertise, their experiences, their wisdom and their sisterhood. After a week of intensive and lively discussion, they will emerge with strategic action plans to continue their global partnerships -- and their work in their own Parliaments and constituencies -- to confront international trafficking of women and girls as a global women's human rights crisis. The 2009 participants include parliamentarians from Bahrain, Burundi, Dominica, Kenya, Namibia, Pakistan, Uganda and Zambia, and women state legislators from Florida, Maryland, and Utah. They join the ever-growing GlobalPOWER® network of women from 14 countries and five US states who took part inGlobalPOWER® 2006 and GlobalPOWER® 2007. • Foreign Policy Institute for State Legislators is the only program in the UnitedStatestobring state-level women policy makers into the world of foreign policy. Since 2001, we have educated a new group of women state legislators each year on the impact of US foreign policy on women around the world. The Class of 2009 will convene in Washington, DC from July 12-16, 2009 - and will join the Institute's 99 legislators from 39 states - three of whom now are Members of the US House of Representatives.

The Institute's curriculum includes a series of seminars on key issues: alleviation of women's poverty, the impact of HIV/AIDS on women, violence against women, international trafficking of women and girls, reproductive rights and health, women peace and security, women's leadership, poverty and climate change.Click here to read more.

The Institute's stellar faculty includes experts and leaders from national and international women's human rights organizations, academia, government, and the media. At the conclusion of the weeklong Institute, legislators pronounce themselves transformed in both their awareness of the challenges faced by women worldwide and of their own role as leaders on these issues. They return to their legislatures prepared to take on a global vision and leadership for women's human rights - at home and abroad.

Our next E-NEWS from the Center will feature our second national Strategic Action Convening (SAC) on Reproductive Rights/Justice and Women and HIV/AIDS and our newest program -- the GlobalPOWER® partnership with the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF)and The Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) on women's leadership in global AIDS policymaking.
