Since its founding in 1972, the Center for Women Policy Studies has taken on difficult issues in the federal policy arena - to work through the policy process to improve women's lives and promote women's human rights. During 2009 and 2010, we will engage with sister organizations in Washington and nationwide as well as with our national network of state legislators in all 50 states on several federal policy initiatives - beginning with two priorities:
1) Ensure that the reauthorization of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program for 2011 and beyond restores access to postsecondary education for TANF recipients - to enable women to complete a college education that will prepare them for careers that can move them, and their children, out of poverty (click here to read our comments to HHS in 2006 and our research/advocacy reports).
2) Ensure that the Administration's National AIDS Strategy for the United States - and the reauthorization of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment and Modernization Act (the Ryan White Program) -- emphasize a woman-centered approach to HIV prevention, access to care, and testing policy. We will engage the members of our LEGISLATORS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ON WOMEN AND HIV/AIDSin this effort and work together to educate their constituents and support the leadership and expertise of their local women and HIV/AIDS organizations.
