The Center Announces New Board Members for the New Year
We are delighted to announce the election of South Carolina State Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter and Joan A. Kuriansky to the Center’s Board of Directors for three year terms, beginning January 1 2012.
The Honorable Gilda Cobb-Hunter is one of our outstanding women leaders serving in a state Legislature and has been a powerful voice for women in the South Carolina Legislature. She also is the Executive Director of CASA/Family Systems, a family violence agency serving Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties in South Carolina. CASA Family Systems operates a domestic violence shelter, a rape crisis center, and other programs to serve the needs of women and girls in the three county region. Representative Cobb-Hunter represents South Carolina as the National Committeewoman to the Democratic National Committee (DNC), as a member of the DNC’s Executive Committee, and as Chair of the DNC Southern Regional Caucus. She is the Chair of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators Youth Committee and also chairs the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus’ Health Committee.
Joan Kuriansky is a national leader on violence against women and economic opportunity for women in the United States and has brought her expertise and wisdom to colleagues globally. For a decade, she was the Executive Director of Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW), a national leader in efforts to achieve independence for women and girls throughout their lifetime. She also has served as Executive Director of the Older Women’s League (OWL), which addresses the economic and social crises that women face as they age. Ms. Kuriansky has strong roots in the violence against women community, having served as the Executive Director of Women Against Abuse (WAA) in Philadelphia and the President of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV).
We are honored to welcome these two powerful leaders to the Center’s Board of Directors and hope that our loyal audience will DONATE NOW to honor their election and support our 2012 programs.
