Center Joins Sister Organizations to Bring Women Leaders to Global HIV/AIDS Policymaking

The Center, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), and the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) joined forces in June to bring women Members of Parliament, journalists, and NGO leaders from three countries to Washington and New York.

Together, these women leaders – from Kenya, India, and Mexico -- built new global partnerships to promote woman-centered HIV/AIDS policy in their countries.

We learned how powerful women united from politics, journalism, and civil society can be – as the 18 women participants created their strategies, shared their knowledge, and inspired their colleagues on Capitol Hill and at the UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS in New York.The Members of Parliament vowed to bring woman-centered policy to their colleagues; the civil society leaders promised to share their expertise from working with women and girls; and, the journalists filed stories from day one and continue to bring women’s voices to the media in their countries.

The sisterhood – and strategies for change -- created during our week together will last for many years and will strengthen each woman’s work to make women’s self-defined needs the centerpiece of HIV/AIDS policy worldwide.
