Women and Poverty
The Center continues its long term focus on alleviation of women’s poverty through humane welfare policy, access to educational and employment opportunities, and respect for low income women’s struggles – and resiliency.  Since 1988, the Center has promoted access to postsecondary education for low income women as an effective welfare reform and poverty alleviation strategy. 

• Profile of Low Income Women Students in Postsecondary Educational Institutions (2004). This fact sheet provides demographic data on low income women college students – who represent a substantial percentage of all women college students.
• From Poverty to Self-sufficiency: The Role of Postsecondary Education in Welfare Reform (2002). This Policy Paper updates and expands the Center’s 1998 report, Getting Smart About Welfare.  It presents current research and data demonstrating that postsecondary education is an effective route out of poverty for TANF recipients, discusses the impact of TANF on women recipients, and includes an analysis of state laws that allow TANF recipients to count postsecondary education as an allowable work activity.
• "Clipping Our Wings": The Impact of Welfare Reform on the College Aspirations of Low Income Women (2001).This Research and Data in Brief report presents the results of the Center’s qualitative research with TANF recipients enrolled in college – to bring the voices of women to policy makers, advocates, and researchers.
• Multiethnic Feminist Visions of Fatherhood: Promoting Feminist Family Policy (1999). This report summarizes the Center's symposium with scholars, activists and policy anaylsts that produced criteria for assessing father-focused policy options and building a multiethinic feminist family policy agenda.
